Breaking wave impacts on offshore wind turbines : results from the DiMe and DIMPACT projects This talk will introduce research efforts dedicated to the improvement the characterization of breaking waves and of their loads on offshore wind turbines. The presentation will first focus on the definition of the breaking onset criterion that is important for the design of offshore wind turbines. It further presents recent advances in the parameterization of the wave breaking statistics, needed to identify the design sea states, when slamming loads are considered. Further experimental efforts to observe interactions between large amplitude breaking waves and offshore structures will be presented. The talk will end with a description of recent experimental, numerical and theoretical developments to better resolve slamming loads on offshore wind turbines.
