It aims at designing novel <em>inexact algebraic<\/em> and <em>linearization solvers<\/em>, with each step being <em>adaptively steered<\/em>, interconnecting at any time all parts of the numerical simulation algorithm. Its key ingredient are optimal a posteriori estimates on the error in the approximate solution which give a <em>guaranteed<\/em> global upper bound, guaranteed local lower <em>bounds<\/em>, <em>robustness<\/em> with respect to the problem parameters, and which distinguish the different <em>error components<\/em> like the spatial, temporal, regularization, linearization, and algebraic solver ones. Computer implementation, assessment on academic and industrial benchmarks, and applications to contemporary <em>environmental problems<\/em> like underground storage of dangerous waste or geological sequestration of CO2 are envisaged.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Tools<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>novel <em>multilevel algebraic solvers<\/em> tailored to porous media simulations<\/li>\n<li>novel <em>adaptive inexact Newton<\/em> linearizations<\/li>\n<li><em>mass balance<\/em> on <em>each algorithm step<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>full adaptivity<\/em> with <em>local stopping criteria<\/em><\/li>\n<li>theoretical proofs of <em>guaranteed global reliability<\/em>, <em>local efficiency<\/em>, <em>convergence<\/em>, and <em>optimality<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>interconnection<\/em> of modeling, analysis of PDEs, numerical analysis, numerical linear algebra, and scientific computing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Final goals<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>total <\/strong>simulation<strong> error<\/strong> is <strong>certified<\/strong> at any time<\/li>\n<li>important<strong> reduction<\/strong> of the current <strong>computational burden <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This project studies algorithms for numerical approximation of complex systems of unsteady nonlinear partial differential equations arising in underground porous media problems.
