Title : Lattice-Boltzmann methods for wind energy applications
Abstract : One of the key players in overcoming climate change is the production of green and decarbonized electricity based on wind energy. Within the design process of wind farms, the reliable prediction of the power production of a farm is indispensable and often achieved by large-eddy simulations. However, traditional solvers based on the Navier-Stokes equations are often too costly in computational performance. More recently, the lattice-Boltzmann method (LBM) has emerged as a suitable alternative to such solvers due to its exceptional computational performance on massively parallel and heterogeneous computing systems. This talk will address how the LBM can be coupled to wind turbine models and eventually enable large-scale simulations of entire wind farms.
