The BetterNet – Inria Project Lab is related to several current projects :
- ANR project BottleNet : understanding and diagnosing end-to-end communication bottlenecks of the Internet
- Metroscope : the scientific observatory of Internet
Several projects around the world are already providing measurement infrastructure, tools and data repositories similar to the active or passive measurement components and back-end repositories of the proposed platform. We can cite:
- The Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) is a collaborative undertaking among organizations in the commercial, government, and research sectors aimed at promoting greater cooperation in the engineering and maintenance of a robust, scalable global Internet infrastructure;
- The Measurement Lab (M-Lab) is an open, distributed server platform for researchers to deploy Internet measurement tools. The goal of M-Lab is to advance network research and empower the public with useful information about their broadband connections;
- The Measurement and Analysis on the WIDE Internet (MAWI) working group has carried out network traffic measurement, analysis, evaluation, and verification from the beginning of the WIDE Project. Among its goals are to evaluate research results under actual traffic and to share measurement and analysis information across the scientific community;
- The Protected Repository for the Defense of Infrastructure Against Cyber Threats (PREDICT) is a community of producers of -relevant network operations data and researchers in networking and information security. Through a centralized repository, it provides developers and evaluators with regularly updated network operations data relevant to cyber defense technology development;
- Decentralized cooperative and privacy preserving MONitoring for trustworthinesS (DEMONS) is a FP7 EU project, which addresses the major challenges of cooperative network monitoring. The goal is to design legal, organizational, and technical infrastructure to respond in a distributed and cooperative way to widely distributed threats which impact several domains;
- Future Internet of Things (FIT) is one project from the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research’s “Équipements d’Excellence” (Equipex) programme. FIT aims to develop an experimental facility, a federated and competitive infrastructure that enable experimentation on innovative services accelerating the design of advanced networking technologies for the Future Internet;
- The Large-Scale Measurement of Broadband Performance (LMAP) is a working group from IETF that standardizes the measurements systems for performance measurements of broadband access devices such as home and enterprise edge routers, personal comput- ers, mobile devices, set top box, whether wired or wireless;
- The Microsoft HomeMaestro project recruited a set of volunteers and ran several mea- surement campaigns. However, this project is limited to a small number of participants, failing to cover the rich diversity of home network usage;
- SamKnows monitors a large number of access links in the Europe and the US, but they do not publish their dataset and do not extensively measure the home network;
- LEONE, from global measurements to local management, is a 30-month long STREP EC funded project targeting “Future Networks” within the 7th FP which started 1st November 2012. It proposes to improve the user’s experience of the Internet and uses the SamKnows probes;
- Grenouille.com is a “meteorological service” for the Internet publishing — in real-time— the performances offered by national Internet Service Providers. Grenouille.com is in- dependant from ISPs and aim to provide impartial information for the French Internet users;
- mPlane is a European FP7 project which focuses on building an Intelligent Measurement Plane for Future Network and Application Management.
Besides, BETTERNET will target Human Factor in Computer Network Interaction, which is an area that the previously mentioned projects did not cover but that needs further investigation. We will also investigate the social determinations of the ways users handle the Internet through end-devices (economic, cultural and professional determinations), as well as the technical determinations (Internet access and performance, battery level, software specifications) on effective social uses.
