Welcome to ELLIS Unit Grenoble
ELLIS Unit Grenoble is a newly established node of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) — Europe’s leading network for scientific excellence in machine learning and artificial intelligence.
We are hosted by the Inria Centre at the University Grenoble Alpes and the MIAI AI Cluster, both associated with Université Grenoble Alpes, and embedded in one of the most dynamic AI research ecosystems in France and in Europe.
Our Mission
Our mission is to establish and sustain an internationally leading research environment in multimodal learning — with computer vision and machine learning at its core, and extending to audio and speech processing, natural language understanding, and geospatial data analysis, with applications to robotics, healthcare, remote sensing, and 3D vision.
We aim to become a centre of excellence within the ELLIS network and in Europe more broadly, recognised for transformative contributions in multimodal AI that reshape how machines perceive, reason, and act in complex real-world settings. Through synergy with Université Grenoble Alpes, Inria, and the MIAI AI Cluster, we act as a nexus where fundamental scientific inquiry, education, and application coalesce — ensuring that European AI leadership is built upon both scientific depth and societal relevance.
What We Do
Foundational Research
We develop core algorithms and theory in machine learning, computer vision, and representation learning — addressing robustness, interpretability, and uncertainty.
Multimodal Learning
A defining strength of the Unit is our focus on learning from and across multiple modalities: vision, 3D, audio, speech, language, and geospatial data.
Societal Impact
We address real-world challenges in robotics, healthcare, environmental monitoring, and remote sensing — bridging fundamental research with applications that matter.

ELLIS fosters scientific excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the training of the next generation of AI researchers through its PhD Program, research Units, and network of Fellows and Scholars.
