(20 Sept 24) France-Brazil 1st Joint Strategic Committee for Science

France and Brazil hold the 1st meeting of their Joint Strategic Committee for Science, Technology and Innovation (COMIX). The French Ministry of Higher Education and Research and its Brazilian counterpart, the Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação, co-chaired the first meeting of the Joint Strategic Committee for Science, Technology and Innovation, held in Manaus on September 20, 2024. On this occasion, the two ministries reaffirmed the strategic dimension of bilateral cooperation, notably with the introduction of calls for co-financed research projects.

4 priority themes have been identified to build stronger partnerships between our two countries:

- Biodiversity, Environment, Climate, Earth Observation
- Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, High-Performance Computing (HPC)
- Health
- Social sciences, Cultural heritage, Law and regulation, Inequalities and inclusion

Cécile Vigouroux, Inria Director for International Relations and Kary Ocana, LNCC Professor have participated to present the thematic "Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, High-Performance Computing (HPC)" (existing collaborations and priority topics between France and Brazil.

4 cooperation agreements have been signed between :

ANR and the Brazilian national funding agency CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico)
ANRS-MIE and CNPq
CNES and INPE (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais)
IRD and INPA (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia

The meeting also provided an opportunity to present the launch of the Franco-Brazilian Center for Biodiversity in the Amazon (CFBBA), the relaunch of which was announced during the President’s visit to Brazil last March. The first meeting of the CFBBA’s binational committee was held on the same day in Manaus.

The committee will meet every three years, alternating between Brazil and France.
