The first edition of the ECCOMAS Young Investigators Committee Grant 2024 to Maria Strazzullo for the project:
“CRAFT: Control and Reg-reduction in Applications for Flow Turbulence”

Maria Strazzullo, a secondee of ARIA Project, has been awarded the prestigious €15,000 ECCOMAS Young Investigators Committee (EYIC) Grant for her project CRAFT (Control and Reg-reduction in Applications for Flow Turbulence). This award will guide her innovative ideas in the field of fluid dynamics related to the mathematical fundations and simulation of turbulent flows under control action.

Overview of CRAFT

The CRAFT project proposes an innovative framework aimed at dealing with turbulence management within fluid dynamics. Using control, reduced-order modeling techniques and regulirization. CRAFT proposes novel strategies to extend well-established control-based strategies in laminar settings to the turbulent framework, both theoretically and computationally.

Typically, flow control approaches are based on common knowledge and practical experimental wisdom.
CRAFT aims at providing rapid tools for fast and accurate simulations to be combined with control strategies for several applied turbulent fields. The main goal it to leverage the stabilizing features of the control and regularization. Regularization smooths the flow solution when spurious oscillations occurs, i.e. when turbulence arises.

The project aims to conceive new modular algorithms for optimization, design and parameter estimation, advancing the understanding of turbulent flows, paving the way for more effective engineering applications.

Objectives of the EYIC Grant

The ECCOMAS Young Investigators Committee Grant has several key objectives:

  1. Independence: the grant endows young researchers like Maria Strazzullo with an important budget, to gain independence from their PhD advisors.
  2. Research Expansion: It supports the establishment of research groups and broadens the reserchears horizons.
  3. Visibility: the grant boosts international visibility and enhances the research network of the recipients.
  4. Foundation for Larger Grants: It acts as a first step to larger grant proposals.

This recognition by ECCOMAS showcases the potential of young researchers to make substantial contributions to their fields.
Maria Strazzullo’s success with the CRAFT project not only highlights her expertise and dedication but also emphasizes the importance of innovative research in fluid dynamics and her achievement should serve as an inspiration for future scientists and engineers in the applied mathematics field.
