Secondment from University of Trieste to Valorem (July 2024)

The aim of the secondment was to define test case for a reduce order model for wind turbine-induced wakes

Previous activities carried out saw the creation of a database on wakes induced by wind turbines generated with a high definition model based on large eddy simulation. The cases were generated first for a fine grid case, then for some selected cases, the flow fields were reproduced with a coarse grid.

In order to validate the reduced order model, it was necessary to generate further cases, therefore with boundary conditions not already used for the development of the model.

Two additional cases were therefore simulated, also in this case we operated on the intensity of the wind through an imposed pressure gradient, placing ourselves on an intermediate case between those already developed, specifically imposing a condition between case 10 and the case 11.

For both, it was first necessary to develop precursor simulations, imposing periodicity conditions in the streamwise direction, for the sole purpose of collecting data on the turbulent structures that could be used as boundary conditions for the actual simulations. Then the cases with the presence of wind turbines were shot using the non-rotating actuator disk BEM methodology. The cases were brought to stationarity, then the first and second order statistics were collected on 6 time windows for each case. Once processed, the data was shared with the project partners.
