1967-2017: Inria celebrated its 50th anniversary!

In 2017 Inria celebrated its 50th anniversary. While remembering all the men and women who, from 1967 to 2017, have made Inria what it is, we shall also be looking ahead to what the future may bring. Inria wants to take the opportunity afforded by this anniversary to think about the digital world in which we would like to live, as well as all the scientific, technological, ethical and philosophical questions it brings with it.

While the advent of a digital world may be unstoppable, it is up to us all to build it!

After celebrating this jubilee in all of the 8 research centers in France in 2017, a 2-day institutional event took place on November at “CENTQUATRE-PARIS”, that was undoubtedly one of the highlights of this anniversary year. Frédérique Vidal, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and Mounir Mahjoubi, Secretary of State for Digital, as well as other personalities from the academic and industrial world came to underline the importance that Inria holds. Over 600 participants attended the event.
The event featured speeches of Ministers and of Cédric Villani (Fields medal), panels on societal issues, scientific presentations, start-ups presentations and demos. Valerie Issarny, senior researcher and Inria@SiliconValley scientific coordinator, was invited to participate to the panel on “How to manage territories with the help of numerical models” (view the full program).

Important announcements were made during the event: partnership with Nokia, joint laboratory with Qwant, and the merger between IT-Translation and Elaia Partners

The Inria 2017 Award ceremony also took place during the event, honoring men and women who contribute to innovative computer science and mathematics and drive the development of our digital world. The Inria awards also underline the contributions of research and innovation support teams who play a significant part in the successes of Inria. This year, the importance of strong scientific international cooperations, such as Inria@SiliconValley, was highlighted by the Award for Support for Research and Innovation given to Inria’s International Partnerships team for its contribution to the impact of the institute on every continent. As a result, Inria is building rich and lasting relationships with the best scientists and the leading universities and research institutions in the field of digital science.
